Over the past few years, the need to improve foreign language education in higher education in Japan has received greater public scrutiny. In keeping with this trend, the Graduate School of Human and Environmental Sciences at Kyoto University established the Department of Foreign Language Acquisition and Education beginning with the 2003 academic year. The Department will serve as a center for research on foreign language education with aim of producing highly competent teachers and researchers for institutions of higher education.

The main research and teaching interests of the Department are as follows:

  • Theoretical research on foreign language education in institutions of higher education.
  • Development of effective materials and learning systems for foreign language teaching.
  • Development of highly competent teachers and researchers in various fields of foreign language education.
